In-plane switching (IPS) is an active-matrix LCD technology designed to solve the poor viewing angles and color reproduction of older twisted-nematic panels. When a voltage is applied, the liquid crystals rotate in the same plane as the screen, allowing light to pass through with consistent color accuracy even when viewed from extreme side angles.
