Yue

nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

An early Chinese stoneware characterized by its thin, olive-green celadon glaze.

Yue ware is a foundational type of high-fired Chinese stoneware originating from kilns in Zhejiang province. It is distinguished by a subtle, ash-based celadon glaze that fires to a grey-green or olive color in a reduction atmosphere. Potters and historians value it as the precursor to later celadons, noting its durable body and the way the glaze pools in carved or incised surface decorations.

Heard on the job

The museum needs a condition report on the Yue bowl before we mount it for the celadon exhibit.

Insider tip

True Yue ware gets its characteristic olive tone from iron oxide fired in a reduction atmosphere, a technique that set the standard for all subsequent celadon production.
