Flambé

nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

A ceramic glaze effect featuring streaked, flowing colors that resemble flames.

A highly decorative glaze finish characterized by rich, flowing streaks of color, typically deep reds, purples, and blues. The effect is produced by applying copper-based glazes and firing them in a reduction atmosphere, where oxygen is starved from the kiln. The glaze melts and runs down the sides of the vessel, creating unpredictable, flame-like patterns.
