Potiche

nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

A covered ceramic vase featuring a rounded or polygonal body, steep sides, and a distinct neck.

A potiche is a specific style of covered vase or jar, traditionally associated with Asian export porcelain. It features a wide, rounded or polygonal body with nearly vertical sides, tapering at the shoulder to a smaller neck. The form is completed with a separate fitted lid, often domed and topped with a finial. These vessels were historically used for storing spices or potpourri but are now primarily decorative forms thrown or slip-cast by studio potters.

Heard on the job

The gallery wants a pair of blue and white potiches for the entryway, so make sure the lids fit tightly before the bisque firing.

Insider tip

Getting the lid to sit perfectly on the neck flange is the hardest part of throwing a potiche, as both pieces will shrink at the same rate during firing.
