Thermal

verbShop talkBuilding

To apply a high-temperature flame to a stone surface to create a textured, slip-resistant finish.

Thermaling is a stone-finishing process where a mason passes a hot blowtorch over the surface of a natural stone, usually granite. The intense heat causes the crystalline structure on the surface to pop and flake off, leaving a rough, uniform texture. This technique is primarily used on paving stones and steps to provide traction when wet.
