Back-butter

verbShop talkBuilding

To apply a layer of thinset or mortar directly to the back of a tile or stone before setting it into place.

Masons and tile setters use this technique to ensure complete adhesive coverage, especially on large-format tiles, natural stone, or uneven substrates. By spreading a thin layer of mortar on the rear face of the material in addition to troweling the floor or wall, the installer eliminates trapped air pockets. This guarantees a solid bond and prevents the tile from cracking under heavy point loads.

Heard on the job

You better back-butter those large format tiles or they're going to pop loose the second someone drops a pan on them.
