Reverse gear

nounStandard termAutomotive

The transmission setting that reverses the rotational direction of the output shaft.

A gear arrangement inside a transmission that inserts an idler gear between the input and output shafts, reversing the drive direction to move the vehicle backward. In manual gearboxes, it is typically straight-cut, which produces a characteristic whining noise. Automatic transmissions achieve this by holding a specific planetary gearset carrier stationary.

Heard on the job

It shifts fine through the forward speeds but grinds hard going into reverse gear.
