Sequential manual gearbox

nounStandard termAutomotive

A transmission where gears must be selected in strict numerical order.

Instead of an H-pattern shifter that allows skipping gears, this gearbox uses a ratcheting drum mechanism to shift up or down one gear at a time. The direct mechanical engagement allows for lightning-fast shifts under full throttle, making it the standard choice for motorcycles and dedicated race cars.
