Quickshifter

nounStandard termAutomotive

An electronic sensor and module system that allows for clutchless, full-throttle upshifts.

A performance device spliced into the shift linkage that detects when the rider or driver engages the gear lever. It momentarily cuts the ignition or fuel delivery for a fraction of a second, unloading the transmission and allowing the next gear to slip into place without closing the throttle or pulling the clutch. It is highly popular on sport motorcycles and track-focused cars to shave milliseconds off acceleration times.

Heard on the job

I installed a new quickshifter on the track bike, so you can just pin the throttle and bang through the gears.

Insider tip

A standard quickshifter only works for upshifts; downshifting without the clutch requires a system with an auto-blipper.
