Rev

verbShop talkAutomotive

To increase the rotational speed of an engine by opening the throttle.

To rapidly increase engine RPM while the transmission is in neutral or the clutch is disengaged. Mechanics rev engines to check for misfires, listen to bearing noises, or verify throttle response. Drivers often do it to build power before a launch or simply to make exhaust noise.

Rev it up to three grand and hold it there while I check the timing marks.
