Holder-up

nounShop talkWelding

A worker who presses a heavy metal bar against the back of a rivet while it is being driven from the other side.

In structural riveting, this crew member works on the blind side of the joint, applying steady force with a bucking bar against the tail of the hot rivet. As the riveter operates the pneumatic hammer on the manufactured head, the resistance from the bucking bar forces the tail to expand and form the field head. The role requires significant physical strength to absorb the repeated impact of the rivet gun.

We need a holder-up on the inside of the tank before I can start driving these rivets.

Insider tip

An experienced holder-up knows exactly how much pressure to apply to ensure the rivet swells properly to fill the hole without bouncing off the work.
