millisecond

unitStandard termUnits

A metric unit of time equal to one thousandth of a second.

The millisecond is an SI submultiple representing 10⁻³ seconds. It is the standard unit for measuring human reaction times, camera shutter speeds, and network ping. In mechanical engineering, it dictates the timing of fuel injectors and airbag deployments, where a delay of a few milliseconds changes the physical outcome entirely.

Heard on the job

The solenoid valve has a 12 millisecond response time, which is fast enough for the pneumatic sequencer.

Insider tip

In audio engineering and acoustics, sound travels roughly one foot per millisecond.
