Wire feedstock built from a thin metal tube packed with powdered alloying elements or carbides. In twin-wire arc spraying it lets shops spray hard iron-based alloys, carbide-filled coatings and special corrosion alloys at arc-spray rates and costs. Coating chemistry depends on both sheath and core, so mixing wires from different lots or makers is avoided.
Boiler waterwalls get the chrome carbide cored wire, two arc guns working off the man-lift.
