Dimity

nounStandard termTextiles

A lightweight, sheer cotton fabric characterized by woven vertical stripes or a checked pattern.

Dimity is a crisp, sheer cotton cloth woven with heavier warp and weft threads at regular intervals to create a raised corded stripe or check effect. The heavier threads give the lightweight background structural stability while maintaining a delicate, semi-transparent drape. It is commonly used for summer dresses, heirloom sewing, and lightweight curtains.

We need three yards of that floral dimity for the summer pinafore samples.

Insider tip

Because of the raised cords, dimity requires careful pressing on the wrong side with a pressing cloth to avoid flattening the textured stripes.
