Submessage

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

A distinct, smaller block of data embedded within a larger communications protocol packet or frame.

A submessage is an independent data structure carried inside a primary message payload. In complex network protocols, a single transmission frame often bundles multiple submessages together to reduce overhead and latency. Each submessage typically has its own header and payload, allowing the receiving system to parse and route different types of information, such as control signals and user data, from a single packet delivery.

Heard on the job

The packet capture shows the main header is intact, but the second submessage containing the telemetry data is malformed.

Insider tip

When debugging dropped packets, check if the protocol parser is failing on a specific submessage type rather than rejecting the entire frame.
