Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching extends standard MPLS to manage not just packet-switched networks, but also time-division, wavelength, and spatial switching. It provides a unified control plane that allows routers to dynamically provision and route traffic across fiber optic wavelengths, SONET/SDH frames, and traditional Ethernet links. This allows carriers to automate bandwidth allocation across entirely different physical media.
