Acquisition time

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

The duration required for a receiver to lock onto enough signals to calculate its initial position or synchronize.

Acquisition time is the interval between powering on a receiver and the moment it successfully locks onto a signal and extracts usable data. In satellite navigation, this involves finding the satellites in the sky, decoding their ephemeris data, and calculating a positional fix. It is heavily dependent on whether the receiver has a recent almanac (a warm start) or is starting completely blind (a cold start).

Heard on the job

The cold start acquisition time on this new chipset is under thirty seconds, even in dense urban canyons.
