Break up

verbStandard termTelecom & IT

The degradation of an audio or digital signal resulting in intermittent dropouts.

A signal breaks up when interference, weak reception, or packet loss causes chunks of the transmission to go missing. On analog radio, this sounds like static punching through the voice. On digital cellular or VoIP links, it manifests as robotic artifacts, clipping, or sudden gaps in the audio stream.
