Base station subsystem

nounStandard termTelecom & IT

The section of a cellular network that manages radio links between mobile devices and the core network.

The base station subsystem is the equipment in a traditional cellular network responsible for handling traffic and signaling between a mobile phone and the network switching subsystem. It consists of the Base Transceiver Stations housing the actual antennas on the towers, and the Base Station Controller which manages radio channels and handovers. It acts as the bridge translating wireless air interfaces into wired backhaul traffic.
