The zone of a lining that sits at the level of the floating slag, where chemical attack, thermal cycling and turbulence combine. In steel ladles it gets the premium magnesia-carbon brick and often decides when the whole working lining comes out. Glass furnaces have the equivalent metal or flux line, where molten glass meets the sidewall blocks.
Slag line is down to 50 millimetres on ladle 7, the walls still have two weeks in them.
