Wood burner

nounStandard termRailroad

An early steam locomotive designed with a firebox and grate optimized to burn cordwood.

These historic engines were common in regions where timber was abundant and coal was scarce or expensive. They required massive amounts of fuel, forcing crews to stop frequently at trackside wood racks to reload the tender. Their exhausts were typically fitted with large, balloon-shaped spark arresters to prevent flying embers from igniting the surrounding forests or wooden rolling stock.

The museum is restoring an old narrow gauge wood burner they pulled out of the logging camp.
