Signal lad

nounShop talkRailroad

A historic entry-level position for a youth assisting a dispatcher or signalman.

An older British and early North American term for a young apprentice working in a signal tower or interlocking plant. Their primary duty was to maintain the train register, logging the exact times that trains passed the tower, thereby freeing the primary operator to throw levers and manage traffic.
