A vertical mast installed beside a track to hold a railway signal.

The vertical pole or mast that supports signal heads, semaphores, or marker lights alongside the right-of-way. It elevates the signal to the engineer's eye level for maximum visibility. The post often houses the wiring connecting the signal lamps to the track circuits and relay cabinets below.

The track gang accidentally clipped the signal post with the ballast regulator and knocked the head out of alignment.
