Running board

nounStandard termRailroad

A narrow external walkway along the side of a locomotive.

The narrow footway built along the exterior of a locomotive to allow crews to inspect and service the equipment. On steam engines, it sits above the driving wheels to provide access to the boiler and running gear. On diesel locomotives with a traditional hood design, it runs along the sides to let mechanics reach the engine doors safely.
