Grab iron

nounStandard termRailroad

A steel handhold bolted or welded to the exterior of a railcar or locomotive.

These mandated safety bars provide a secure grip for crew members climbing up, riding the side of, or crossing between moving equipment. They are strictly regulated by the FRA for dimensions, clearance, and fastening strength. A bent or loose bar immediately flags a car for repair.

Heard on the job

Don't ride that tank car, the bottom grab iron is bent inward and you won't get a boot in the stirrup.

Insider tip

Never trust a grab iron blindly on an older car; always test it with a firm pull before trusting it with your body weight.
