Hostler

nounShop talkRailroad

A terminal worker who moves, fuels, sands and services locomotives inside the engine facility.

Hostlers take locomotives off arriving trains, run them to the fuel pad and sand tower, line them up in the right order for outbound trains and park them on the ready tracks. They operate locomotives only within terminal limits and never run trains on the main. The title is borrowed from the hostler who tends horses at an inn or stable.
