Re-tractioning

nounStandard termRailroad

The process of replacing or upgrading the traction motors on a locomotive.

A major shop overhaul procedure where a locomotive's worn or outdated traction motors are removed and replaced with rebuilt or upgraded units. This maintenance extends the life of the motive power and often improves pulling capacity or reliability without the cost of buying a completely new locomotive. It usually involves lifting the car body and swapping out the entire truck assembly.
