Observation car

nounStandard termRailroad

A passenger coach featuring enlarged windows or an open platform to provide an unobstructed view of the passing scenery.

Often positioned at the very rear of a passenger train, this specialized coach is designed to maximize visibility for travelers. Traditional versions featured an open-air rear platform with a brass railing, while later streamlined designs enclosed the rear in rounded glass. They serve as premium lounge spaces on long-distance routes, allowing passengers to watch the track recede and take in wide views of the surrounding terrain.
