A circular steel retaining device used to secure a replaceable tire to a locomotive wheel center.

A rolled steel ring driven into a groove between a wheel center and its outer steel tire. The ring prevents the tire from sliding off the wheel laterally if it becomes loose due to thermal expansion from heavy braking. It provides a mechanical fail-safe on older built-up wheel designs.

Heard on the job

The shop foreman found a loose Gibson ring on the third driving wheel and ordered the locomotive out of service.
