Recto

nounStandard termPrinting

The right-hand page of an open book or manuscript, traditionally bearing an odd page number.

The front side of a printed leaf, which appears on the right side of an open bound book in left-to-right reading cultures. In standard book formatting, this page always carries an odd folio number. Binders and layout artists pay special attention to these pages because chapters, major sections, and title pages are traditionally forced to begin here, sometimes requiring the insertion of a blank facing page.

Heard on the job

Force that new chapter to start on a recto, even if you have to drop in a blank verso before it.

Do not mix it up with

  • Verso: Recto is the right-hand page with an odd number, while verso is the left-hand page with an even number.
