Blind folio

nounStandard termPrinting

A page number that is counted in the book's sequence but not printed.

A page that counts toward the total pagination of a publication but does not display a printed numeral. Designers use these on front matter, part titles, blank pages, and full-bleed image pages where a visible number would disrupt the layout. The numbering picks up silently on the next printed page.

Heard on the job

The chapter opener is a blind folio, so the first visible number will be page 15 on the verso.

Insider tip

A common rookie mistake is forgetting to increment the pagination after a blind folio, throwing off the entire table of contents.
