Counterproof

nounStandard termPrinting

A reversed print created by pressing a fresh sheet of paper against a wet proof.

This image is pulled directly from a freshly inked proof rather than from the printing plate itself. Because the ink transfers from paper to paper, the resulting image is a mirror reflection of the original proof, matching the exact orientation of the engraving or plate surface. Engravers use this technique to check their work in progress without having to mentally reverse the image.
