Flong

nounStandard termPrinting

A papier-mâché mold pressed against a form of lead type to cast a solid printing plate.

A traditional mold made of layered tissue paper, paste, and backing paper that is pressed into a locked-up form of movable type to capture its exact impression. Once dried and baked, the rigid flong receives molten metal to cast a solid stereotype plate, allowing the original type to be redistributed.

Heard on the job

We need to bake the flong for another ten minutes before it's dry enough to pour the lead.
