Core

nounStandard termPrinting

The sturdy central tube around which a roll of paper or substrate is wound.

This thick cardboard, plastic, or metal cylinder acts as the foundation for a web of paper. The press unwind stand features chucks or an expanding shaft that grips the inside of the cylinder tightly, allowing the machine to pull the paper through the printing units under controlled tension.

Heard on the job

The chuck is slipping because the cardboard core got crushed in transit.
