Pulled at turn-up from the outside wraps of each reel, it gives the lab a cross-machine strip for brightness, color, opacity, grammage, caliper and strength. Results are logged against the reel number so reels that fail can be held. A sample from the wrong reel or a damaged wrap is a classic cause of a false hold.
Reel sample for 22 is on the bench, with drive side, tending side and middle all marked.
Take the sample from under the outermost wraps, which get handled, scuffed and dried out before anyone tests them.
