Fly

nounShop talkNonwovens

Loose airborne fibers released by opening, carding and cutting that settle on machines and floors.

Fly drifts off openers and cards and builds up on frames, ducts and light fittings, where it is a fire hazard and can drop back into the web as clumps. Good extraction, steady humidity and the right fiber finish keep it down. Crews blow down and vacuum fly on a fixed schedule.

Heard on the job

Fly is building up over card two again, get it cleaned before a clump drops in the web.

Insider tip

Treat fly buildup as a fire risk first and a quality issue second; fires in carding rooms spread fast through fiber dust.
