Day level

nounStandard termMining

A horizontal mine tunnel that opens directly to the surface.

An adit or horizontal tunnel driven into a hillside that connects directly to the outside air. Day levels were commonly used in hilly terrain for natural drainage and easy haulage, allowing water to flow out and ore to be trammed out without the need for hoisting shafts.
