Davy lamp

nounStandard termMining

An early safety lamp designed to prevent explosions in gassy coal mines.

A historic oil-fueled miner's lamp invented by Sir Humphry Davy. It features a fine wire mesh cylinder enclosing the flame. The mesh acts as a flame arrestor, dissipating heat so that the flame cannot ignite any combustible methane in the surrounding mine air. It also served as a gas detector, as the flame would burn higher and with a blue tint in the presence of gas.

Heard on the job

Before electric cap lamps, a deputy would carry a Davy lamp to test for gas at the roof.
