Frue vanner

nounStandard termMining

A mechanical shaking belt used to separate fine heavy ore particles from lighter waste.

A historic piece of mineral processing equipment consisting of a wide, endless rubber belt that travels uphill while shaking side to side. A shallow stream of water washes down the belt, carrying away the lighter gangue, while the heavier valuable minerals stick to the shaking surface and are carried over the top to be collected. It was heavily used for concentrating fine gold, tin, and copper ores.

Heard on the job

The old mill ruins still have the concrete mountings where the Frue vanners used to sit.
