Vanning

nounStandard termMining

The manual process of washing crushed ore on a shovel to evaluate its mineral content.

This traditional gravity separation technique tests the quality of an ore sample right at the mine site. A worker places crushed rock and water on a specialized shovel, swirling and tossing the mixture so that lighter waste washes off the edge while heavy metallic particles settle in the center.
