Tossing

nounStandard termMining

A traditional mineral processing technique that separates heavy ore from lighter waste by violent agitation in water.

Tossing is an early gravity separation method where crushed ore is aggressively stirred or agitated in a tub of water. The violent motion suspends the lighter gangue minerals, allowing the heavier metallic particles to settle at the bottom of the vessel. Once the water is drained or skimmed, the concentrated ore is recovered from the base of the tub for further refining.
