To excavate a deep groove at the bottom of a coal seam to help it fracture.

To manually or mechanically excavate a deep groove at the very bottom of a coal seam or in the soft rock immediately below it. This creates a void that allows the overlying block of coal to fracture and collapse easily when wedged or blasted from above.

You need to underhole that face at least three feet deep before we try dropping the top coal.
