An early reverberatory furnace used in the open-hearth steelmaking process. The circular bed was inclined and rotated continuously, exposing different parts of the molten bath to the flames. This mechanical agitation sped up melting and oxidation compared to stationary hearths.
Heard on the job
The Pernot furnace improved mixing, but the mechanical wear on the rotating hearth was a maintenance nightmare.
