During traditional copper refining, workers thrust green wood poles into the melt to strip out excess oxygen. If the process is carried on too long, the oxygen level drops too low and hydrogen dissolves into the metal. Upon casting, this dissolved gas forms severe porosity, making the copper brittle and unusable.
