Wind

verbStandard termMaritime

The maneuver of turning a vessel completely around end for end in a tight space.

The deliberate action of rotating a ship 180 degrees within its own length or a confined waterway, swapping the positions of the bow and stern. Pilots execute this maneuver using mooring lines, tugs, or the ship's own thrusters and propellers. It allows a vessel to depart a dock facing the opposite direction from how it arrived.

Heard on the job

We need to wind the ship on the spring line before the tide drops too low.

Insider tip

Pronounced with a long 'i' (like 'find'), not like the weather phenomenon.
