Bell

nounStandard termMaritime

A chime struck every half hour to mark the progression of a watch shift.

Time aboard a ship is traditionally tracked in four-hour watch periods, marked by acoustic signals. One strike indicates the first half-hour of the watch, with an additional strike added every thirty minutes until eight bells signal the end of the four-hour shift. The sequence then resets for the next crew taking over the deck.
