Bitter

nounStandard termMaritime

A single wrap or turn of an anchor cable around the bitts.

A single complete turn of a heavy rope, hawser, or anchor cable around the deck bitts. This wrap provides friction to control the payout of the line under heavy load, such as when dropping anchor or securing a large vessel. The part of the cable remaining inboard of the bitts is known as the bitter end.

Heard on the job

Take a bitter around the port bitt before we pay out any more slack.
