Marine glue

nounStandard termMaritime

A waterproof compound used to seal the seams of a wooden deck.

A thick, waterproof compound made from pitch, rubber, and solvents, used to fill and seal the seams between wooden deck planks. Shipwrights pour it hot over the oakum caulking to create a flexible, watertight barrier that expands and contracts with the wood in changing weather.

Heard on the job

Heat up another bucket of marine glue; we need to pay the seams on the foredeck before it rains.
