Ramline

nounStandard termMaritime

A heavy cord used by shipwrights to establish a straight centerline along a hull.

A long, taut line stretched from the stem to the sternpost during the construction of a wooden vessel. Shipwrights use it as a reference axis to ensure the keel is laid perfectly straight and the frames are aligned symmetrically on both sides.

Heard on the job

Stretch the ramline tight so we can check the alignment of these new frames.
