Ribbands are long, flexible strips of wood bolted or clamped horizontally across the outside of a ship's vertical frames during the early stages of building. They lock the ribs in their exact designed positions, fair the hull shape, and provide rigidity to the skeletal framework before the permanent outer planking is fastened. As the permanent planks are installed, the ribbands are removed one by one.
